Bayless Jr. High

Grades 7-8, 275, 53% free and reduced lunch

Bayless Jr. High builds trust and a caring community among the diverse student culture of Caucasian, Bosnian, African American, Asian, Hispanic, and American Indian students with 39% English Language Learners (ELL). Students experience a closer sense of community in daily advisories. They “loop” or stay with their advisor and family of students for two years, rotating weekly between team-building, character discussions, reading, and intramurals. They have met AYP for the past four years, are becoming articulate in class meeting discussions and, sharing the tragedy of a student suicide, are trained in SOS (Signs of Suicide) and ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell). Weaving character education into core academics is an integral part of differentiated instruction. The students take ownership of their learning with student-led conferences. They teach as they mentor Pony Pals from the elementary school and, as part of the 32-member Character Council, they deliver lessons and facilitate discussions among their peers. The school culture is moving away from extrinsic rewards, instituting an MVP (Most Valuable Practice) award to recognize student initiatives rather than individuals.
