National Schools of Character AwardsCHARACTERplus: History of Members' National Character Awards The highest level of achievement in Character Education is designation as a National School of Character. The award was introduced by Character Education Partnership (CEP), a national clearinghouse based in Washington D.C., in 1998. In the past three years, CHARACTERplus member schools from Missouri have received more national awards than any other state. Since the award’s inception, Missouri has captured 16 titles from a total of 137; the highest number from among the 32 states that claim a National School of Character. California is second with 13 and Florida third with 8. “The Missouri sweep is attributable to the long-term, bold leadership in character education throughout that state,” said Joe Mazzola, executive director of CEP, in 2008. That year, Missouri had five of the 10 winners and all were active members of CHARACTERplus.
